Research Focus:

Our laboratory is dedicated to translational research in cancer focusing on experimental pharmacology. With our collaborators, we have developed new techniques and assays to study the oncogensis and treatment of B-cell and T-cell lymphomas such as patient-derived organoid (PDO), patient-derived xenograft (PDX) and genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models. My lab has contributed to define the basis for targeting transcription factors like BCL6 and complementary approaches including targeting of transcription and epigenetic modulators (DNMT, HDAC, LSD1, CDK7/CDK9), cellular stress-associated proteins (HSF1, HSP90), RNA translation regulators (XPO1, EIF4E) as well as the lymphoma microenvironment (integrins, cancer-supporting cells). Our lab focuses in the intreaction between lymphoma microenvironment (LME) and cancer cells and how this interaction can be used for patient categorization, treatment selection and therapeutic optimization of immunotherapies. We studie these relationship in several clinical settings including refractory and relapse disease, health disparity and elderly populations. Several of these approaches are currently being tested in clinical trials for which we contribute with companion biomarker studies for precision medicine.

Headshot of Maria Eloisi Caldas-Lopes
Maria Eloisi Caldas-Lopes , Ph.D.
  • Research Associate in Medicine
Research Focus:

Dr. Caldas-Lopes is a pharmacologist scientist dedicated to study mechanisms of drug resistance and response as well as the biology of B-cell lymphomas. She studies the role of novel transcription factors acting as tumor supressors in NF-kB-driven aggressive lymphomas that are refractory to standard treaments. She also studies how this lymphomagenic process decreases lymphoma immunity and shapes the lymphoma microenvironment. She conducts correlative studies in clinical trials involving B-cell amd T-cell lymphoma patients treated with epigenetic drugs, targeted agents and immunotherapeutic approaches.

Headshot of Nicolas Di Siervi
Nicolas Di Siervi , Ph.D.
  • Post-Doctoral Associate
Research Focus:

He studies the interaction between different cells of the microenvironment with lymphoma cells to understand the role of the lymphoma microenvironment (LME) in the progression of this disease and how this information can be used for development of innovative treatments for patients with B-cell and T-cell lymphomas. He is focusing in the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts and tumor associated macrophages in sustaining lymphoma cells while decreasing lymphoma immunity. Employing an array of techniques and innovative animal models, he developed therapeutic approaches based primarily in targeting the LME.

Vicky Revuelta , Ph.D.
  • Sr. Reserach Associate in Bioinformatics
Research Focus:

She studies computational biology in B-cella and T-cell lymphomas with emphasis in transcriptomics, metabolomics, DNA methylomics and proteomics. She applies a vast array of bioinformatic tools to the analysis of pre-clinical models and patient samples including single-cell "omics". Her reserach interest includes the cell-cell communication of microenvironment and cancer cell in lymphomas and how this intreaction induces transcriptional and epigenetic changes. She design and analysis samples from clinical trials to develop pharmacodynamic and patient-selection biomarkers to increase the precision of novel therapeutic approaches. Her research focuses in understanding how biological traits contribute to health disparities in lymphoma patients including geriatric populations.

Nahuel Zamponi , Ph.D.
  • Sr. Research Associate
Research Focus:

His research interest focuses in the role of mitochondria physiology and pathology in the maintenance of B-cell lymphomas, particularly in the events leading to disease progression. He study how metabolites and other mitochondria-derived products shape the lymphoma microenvironment (LME) for disease progression and to decrease lymphoma immunity and how these pathways can be capitalized for therapeutic gain and increase the effect of immunotheraputic approaches.
