Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Translational Research Program Award

We have previously found that a type normal cells called macrophages that usually participate in inflammatory reactions can be attracted by lymphoma cells. In the vicinity of lymphoma cells macrophages are modified to produce molecules that increase the proliferation of lymphoma cells and decrease the activity of anti-cancer immune cells. We identified a key pathway necessary for these "lymphoma-educated” macrophages that we plan to target using a new oral compound. If successful, these experiments could lead to a novel chemotherapy-free treatment for lymphoma patients.
